Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry

Some children are unable to cope with the normal delivery of dental care for several reasons such as a high level of anxiety or special needs. These children may be good candidates for dental treatment under sedation. Smilezone dental clinic offers the following sedation options.

  1. Nitrous Oxide (Laughing gas)

The American Academy of Paediatric Dentistry endorses the use of nitrous oxide as a safe and effective technique to reduce anxiety in children. Laughing gas is a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen administered by inhaling a sweet, pleasant aroma through a nasal mask. Your child will still be awake but will feel relaxed and in some cases drowsy. They will be able to respond to verbal cues from the dentist. Laughing gas is one of the safest forms of sedation. It has a rapid onset and the effects wear off almost immediately.

  2. General Anaesthesia

For some children, nitrous oxide/laughing gas may not be effective. In such cases, the child is treated in a hospital setting under general anaesthesia. Medication is administered to the child to allow them to go to sleep while receiving treatment. General anaesthesia is safe when administered by a well-trained physician in an appropriate setting. Ideal candidates for general anaesthesia are children with special needs, severe anxiety, medically compromising conditions or young children with extensive dental decay.
