Interceptive Orthodontics

Interceptive Orthodontics

  1. Space Maintainers

Should your child prematurely lose a baby tooth, your paediatric dentist may recommend a space maintainer to prevent future space loss and complicated dental problems.

Left untreated, the tooth next to the space may tilt and drift forward, thus preventing the permanent tooth below the space from taking its natural position. Space maintainers are made of unobtrusive metal that is custom fit to your child’s mouth. Children usually adapt to them within a few days. It is more time and cost effective to place a space maintainer rather than use orthodontic treatment to move teeth back into place after space loss.

  2. Habit Breakers

Habits such as extended thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting can distort the alignment of your child’s teeth. It is important to address these issues early while their bones are still pliable. Habit breakers are appliances customised to your child’s mouth that will make it uncomfortable to carry on the habit and stop it altogether. Waiting for too long could lead to complicated orthodontic treatment.
